Michael Schumacher

Date of birth - 3rd January 1969
Country - Germany
Team - Ferrari
Michael Schumacher started his racing, as so many others, with karts and was obviously helped by the fact that his parents ran the Kerpen circuit. His karting career was successful and soon he moved into the German Formula Konig series.
Michael moved up to Formula 3 in 1989 following the success he had in his first season with cars. In his first year he finished runner-up in the German series. He stayed one more season which allowed him to win both The German and the Macau title and this is where the battle between himself and Mika Hakkinen started.
Schumacher and his 1989 rival and fellow countryman Heinz-Harald Frentzen, among others, were chosen to represent the Mercedes Junior Team in the 1990 World Sports Car.
By the way; Heinz-Harald's girlfriend at that time is now Michael Schumacher's wife.
Instead of moving to the F3000 series he stayed for a second season of World Sports Cars in 1991. While he was in Japan for this series he decided to have a go at F3000 and so raced in his first ever F3000 race, coming second. This caught the attention of Eddie Jordan who decided to give Schumy a run in Formula One.
He debuted in Belgium in 1991 where he qualified 7th but retired on the first lap. He was promptly bought by Benetton and closed off the season with them. In his first season in the top formula of racing he finished in the points 3 times. He won his first race in 1992 and the rest, as they say, is history.
Finishing third in the 2005 season was pretty poor and he seems to have lost motivation as well as a superior car. With a new partner in Felipe Massa we hope to see him mounting a serious challenge against the new champion Fernando Alonso.

Drag Racing - The Perfect Launch

Drag racing, a contest between two cars beginning from a complete stop over a distance of a 1/4 mile (1320 feet) depends heavily on first 60 feet of the race, or the launch. The technique used for launching varies greatly depending on the how the car is equipped. The type of transmission, which wheels are being driven, tires, power, suspension and track preparation all play key roles in how to go about getting the best launch possible from the car.
Improvements on the time it takes for the car to travel the first 60 feet down the track have significant implications on the final ET (estimated time). As a general rule, improvements in the 60 foot time, are magnified by 2x on your final ET. For example, a Dodge Viper GTS that runs a 12.2 @ 120 MPH in the 1/4 mile with a 60 foot time of 2.0 can make significant improvements to it's 1/4 mile times by obtaining a better launch. If the Dodge Viper GTS is able cut .2 (two tenths) of a second off it it's 60 foot time, by covering the first 60 feet in 1.8 seconds, it's final ET for the 1/4 mile would be around 11.8 @ 119 - 121MPH. More examples can be found by searching through the thousands of 60 foot records in the http://www.dragtimes.com drag racing database.
The best possible launch is obtained by obtaining the optimal balance of applying the most amount of power to the ground with the least amount of wheel spin. If too much power is applied during the launch and the tires spin, the resulting 60 foot time will be poor. The same goes for not applying enough power, thereby causing the car's engine to bog, and having the car limp off the line slowly.
When launching a car with an automatic transmission, a technique called power braking is used. After properly staging the car at the drag strip's staging lane, tightly hold down the brake with one foot, while slowly applying the accelerator peddle with the other foot. The car's engine RPM (revolutions per minute) should slowly increase to a point where the car will either start to move or start spinning the tires. Hold down both the brake and accelerator peddles just below the point where the car is starting to move or spinning the tires. When the christmas tree lights reach the last amber light before the green, lift off of the brake and slowly push the gas peddle all the way down. The correct RPM to launch at will be different every car depending on all of the variables mentioned earlier. Start conservative with the first launch and keep increasing the RPM at which the car is launched at during the subsequent runs. If the car starts spinning the tires after the launch, lower the launch RPM and try again.
When launching a car with a manual transmission come to a complete stop after the car is properly staged. Press the clutch in all the way with one foot while pressing the accelerator peddle down with the other foot, raising the engine RPM to a constant moderate level for the first launch. Lift up on the clutch peddle to the point where the car is just about to start moving and hold both peddles still. When the christmas tree lights reach the last amber before the green, slowly release the clutch while quickly applying the accelerator peddle enough to launch the car quickly, but not too much to induce a large amount of wheel spin. Start conservative with the first launch and keep increasing the RPM at which the car is launched at during the subsequent runs. If the car starts spinning the tires too much after the launch, lower the launch RPM and try again.
To obtain better launches and bring down 60 foot times even more, the use of drag radial or full slick tires can be used on more powerful cars that have trouble launching at any RPM on regular street tires. Drag radials and full slicks usually require a burnout to heat up the tires and clean them from debris for optimum performance. A burnout is a rapid spinning of the car's tires while the car stays relatively still.
All wheel drive cars (AWD) are typically the easiest to launch because the engine's power is distributed to 4 wheels instead of two. Rear wheel drive (RWD) cars typically launch better than front wheel drive (FWD) due to the transfer of weight to the rear tires during the launch, causing an increase in traction. If the car has aftermarket adjustable suspension, adjustments can be made specific for drag racing to increase the weight transfer to the driving wheels.
The track's launch pad preparation also plays an important role in how well and how hard cars can launch. The launch area is usually prepped with traction compounds to add to the stickiness of the track. A well prepped track will definitely help drop 60 foot times and result in lower 1/4 mile times.
During the breaks and cool down periods between drag racing runs, make detailed notes about how you launched on the back of each timeslip. These notes can help you diagnose launching issues, fine-tune subsequent launches and show improvements in the search for The Perfect Launch.

Formula One Specifications

The FIA (the governing body of motorsport) has made quite a few changes to the technical regulations of F1 cars. Some of these will be in effect as early as the start of the 2006 season and the rest will only come into play in 2008.
Here are some of the more interesting specs that have changed:
It was decided last night (Monday 24th Ocober) at a meeting of the Formula One Commission in London that the qualifying format for Formula One is changing for next season and the changing of tyres during races will be allowed again. They are also considering a radical change in the rear-wing design which might be brought in as early as 2007.
The new qualifying is going to work as follows:
A 3 phase qualifying knockout with the 5 slowest cars after 15 minutes dropping out. 5 more cars will drop out in the next 15 minutes and the remaining cars will compete in a 20 minute session for the top positions on the grid.
Qualifying has been changed a lot in recent years to try and get better exposure for smaller teams and at the same time mix the grid up to allow for more overtaking during a race.
The new split rear wing (called the Centre Downwash Generating Wing) has been designed to allow closer following and therefore more passing opportunities as well. A step in the right direction as recent changes to the cars and especially aerodynamics have been mostly to slow the cars down instead of increase entertainment.
The weight of the entire vehicle, including the driver, must now not be less than 550kg. This has been decreased from 605kg.
The engines have been down-sized to 2.4 litre V8 motors with 4 valves per cylinder. The minimum number of gears for these cars is 4 and the maximum is 7. The wheel width at the front of all cars must be between 390mm and 450mm with the width at the rear being between 490mm and 505mm. The overall weight of the engine must be at least 95kg.
The FIA have given a concession to manufacturers and teams not ready with their new engines saying they will allow them to use other engines (such as the V10 engines currently being used) with the performance decreased; obviously this will be controlled by the FIA and no-one else.
All cars must now be fitted with a starter which the driver must be capable of using to start the engine from his seated position. This should cut out some of those embarrassing failed starts to GP's for some drivers.
From 2008 the FIA will choose 1 tyre manufacturer to supply all the teams. This is a dramatic change and should increase the excitement value by levelling the playing field a bit; it's a real pity they could only get this in from 2008.
Pit to car telemetry will be prohibited so the team will not be able to fix any gremlins from the pit-wall and all voice radio communication must be open and accessible to both the FIA and the broadcasters.
No competitor can carry out more than 30,000km of testing during a year.
Some interesting changes here, I sincerely hope it increases the competitiveness and excitement of this sport because it needs it.

Motocross Training Tips

As far as extreme sports are concerned, motocross is one of the popular ones. The adrenaline rush experienced during a motocross race is unlike anything else. The thrill is what makes the sport so addictive. For those who are serious about motocross racing, effective training is a must. Here are a few training tips that can ensure that you are in the top form to participate in the racing season.
Prepare a Program
If you do not have a training program, the first thing you need to do is prepare one. Evaluate your strengths as well as weaknesses and plan accordingly. If you already have a training program in place, you need to review it periodically. Consider how you feel after a training session. If you feel fine, it may be time to take your training program to the next level, but if you feel so tired that you can hardly stand, you may need to slow down a bit. Before you start training, make sure that you have all the required protective equipment. This includes motocross clothing, helmets, goggles, gloves and boots.
Bring Variety in Your Training Routine
You are much more likely to stick to a training program that offers a lot of variety. Plan the training routine for each week in such a manner that it includes a variety of exercises and activities. You can make the routine more exciting by combining exercises with your favourite sports like rock climbing, wakeboarding, basketball, snow skiing or road cycling. You can also vary the intensity of workouts. Combining light sessions with tough ones will keep you motivated. Bringing variety in your training program can go a long way in keeping you focused.
Get a Partner
One of the best ways to stay motivated is to train with a partner. It would be ideal to train with someone who is as interested in motocross racing as you are. If this is not possible, even the company of a family member, a friend or a co-worker can help you keep up with your training program.
Don't Forget to Stretch
In spite of its importance, stretching is one of the most neglected aspects of motocross training. Many studies indicate that stretching and resultant higher level of flexibility can bring down the possibility of serious injuries. At the end of a training session stretching helps relieve soreness of muscles. If you do want to stay down because of injuries, apart from using safety gear like motocross clothing and helmet, make sure that you stretch. Dedicating just 10 minutes of your workout to stretching can make a significant difference.

Commercial Law - Trademark Infringement on Google AdWords

Whenever a business successfully builds a positive reputation in the marketplace and establishes a solid client base, there is always the potential for trademark infringement to become a problem. Competitors may attempt to use names, phrases, designs and colour schemes which are similar to your own in order to lure away your customers by causing them to mistakenly associate your positive reputation with the product or service which they are providing.
This is particularly the case in the online world, where branding is extremely important. Most people find what they are looking for online by typing a search term into a search engine's web page and then following the links to relevant websites which the search engine returns. But how does the law of trademark infringement apply to the sponsored links, such as Google AdWords?
What is Google AdWords
AdWords is a service which Google offers under which business can pay to "sponsor" a word. When this word is typed into Google, links to businesses which have sponsored that word appear prominently on the right hand side of the web page. So for example, an electrical goods company might sponsor the phrase "Cheap TV" and whenever someone searches for this phrase the company's advert will appear at the right hand side of the page. The contentious issue here is that Google will allow businesses to sponsor AdWords which are also the brand names or trade marks of competitors.
What is the law?
In July 2010 the European Court of Justice issued guidance on the circumstances in which one company may use a trademark of another company as an ad-word when delivering its judgment in the case of Portakabin Limited and Portakabin BV v Primakabin BV.
In this case Primakabin and Portakabin were rivals which manufactured the same line of products (portable accommodation/storage units). Primakabin had purchased the ad-word "portakabin" from Google, together with common mis-spellings of this word. This meant that whenever anyone typed "portakabin" into Google, they would see an advert for Primakabin's products at the top-right of the screen. Portakabin sued, claiming that Primakabin were infringing on its trademark.
What about Google's liability for trademark infringement?
The European Court of Justice decided that in cases where one company purchases an ad-word which is also a trademark of a competitor, there is not a trademark infringement as long as the advert makes it clear that there is no commercial connection between the company placing the advert and the company which owns the trademark. The issue which any court must consider is whether there is a likelihood that anyone who saw the advert after typing in a search term would be confused as to the origin of the goods or services which are advertised
The case also clarified that it is possible for a company to infringe on its competitors intellectual property rights by purchasing and using AdWords which are mis-spellings of the competitor's trademark. In these cases the advertiser has the same duty to make it clear that it is not commercially connected with the company which owns the trademark.
What about Google's liability for trademark infringement?
The issue of Google's liability for trademark infringement by advertisers or service users who host content online has already been addressed by the European Court of Justice in the case of Google France v Louis Vuitton. The Court decided that Google is not liable for trademark infringements which are perpetrated by users of its services as long as it takes steps to remove any content which infringes on another party's intellectual property rights as soon as is reasonably practicable after it has been informed of the infringement.

3 Ways To Master The Bowling Strike

Amongst all the sports that you can play, there is one that anyone can have fun with, but few master. That game is bowling, and it has been around for a very long time. Millions of people annually find the game to be rewarding, and for those that are looking for a challenge, the learning curve can be quite daunting to say the least. Now, before we continue, it's important to understand that the game is not a difficult one to play, but if you're going to master the elusive bowling strike, you're going to have to put in some serious effort into your style. There are 3 ways to master the game, and if you can get the steps down into a perfect array, you're going to be the envy of everyone that watches or even plays with you. Consider the following and then keep your focus, you will see the 300 points light up sooner than later.
Throwing Hard - The first way you can turn the tide of lackluster results in regards to bowling is to simply start throwing faster. This is not going to be easy, consider the ball can weigh upwards of 20 pounds. Do not simply throw it, but rather finesse it to where the fulcrum of your release is as fast as you can get it. The faster the ball goes the more kinetic energy is distributed upon impact with the kingpin. You have to do this at optimal speeds so that you can get a strike each time. This will take time to master, but once you do so; you will see major moves in your game.
Spin The Ball - If you aren't keen on using brute force to get all the pins down, then at least consider getting more spin on your throws. You will have to throw with some force, but don't let that be the only thing that you're doing. Be well aware of your wrist and hand. With a turn of the wrist and hands you can curve the ball and command it to hit the pins at a certain angle, forcing the strike. This is going to be difficult to envision in writing, but once you start to experiment on the lanes, you'll see why it's crucial to get a good spin on the ball upon release.
Practice - The third and final way to master getting strikes is to practice. This fundamental option is going to help you move forward with your game. It is not going to be easy at first, and many will stumble in the process, but if you practice as often as you can, you will learn how your body moves and be able to decipher when and how to make the ball do what you want it to do. There's no replacement for practice, so make sure you're playing the game as often as humanly possible.
The above tips are meant for novices that are looking to get the elusive 300 in 10 frames. If you're chasing it constantly, utilize the above, and see how your scores rise swiftly.
