This article is about the Egyptian necklace and is based on some random information I picked up when researching Egyptian tattoos. The point of this article is to provide not so well known facts about ancient Egypt and their tattoos so enough talk and lets look at the Egyptian necklace.
The necklace was also called the menit and it was simply a loop of beads that were connected by a piece of metal that would hang at the back of the neck. The necklace would be used ornamentally and could also be used as a religious instrument to make noise when the beads would shake against each other.
The necklace is linked to the wife of Horus; Hathor who would use the necklace as a vessel of magical power that assisted her carry out her duty of assisting people into the afterlife. Only she could harness the power of the necklace which is why it has become a symbol of female power. The necklace is pictured being worn by queens acting as priestesses and it was never officially associated with men.
The ceremonial method of a queen or noble woman offering her husband or king support would be to offer the necklace to him, however it is important to note that it would simply be an offering because the king could not harness the necklace power and would not be a part of this specific burial ceremony.
This symbol is very powerful as a female tattoo because it portrays the importance of women and their role in society.
There is a small mention of men wearing it who were a part of the Hathor cult however as you can imagine this cult did not hold much influence at all.
