The Importance of Cleaning Your Coffee Pot

Having a delicious cup of coffee in the morning is the perfect pick me up. I often find that I will wake to my alarm and need a reason to look forward to getting out of bed. That is sad to say, but so true! I will often think of my delicious cup of Kona coffee or Jamaican Blue Mountain, and then I will practically spring out of bed! Having a great cup of coffee can turn your day into something special.
The key to having that wonderful morning pick me up, is to make sure you have cleaned your coffee pot! It does not matter how gourmet or special your coffee is, if you have not properly cleaned out your coffee pot. You can buy the most expensive beans in the world but with a dirty pot, all you will taste is bitterness and a product that is sub par.
Cleaning your coffee pot does not have to be a chore. I am a firm believer in cleaning out my pot every couple of weeks. At the very least, once a month. There are a couple methods to cleaning your pot, but I have found the vinegar method is the best way to clean your brewing system.
When using the vinegar method you simply want to dilute vinegar to a 2 parts water, 1 part vinegar ratio. You then want to simply brew a pot of vinegar. Pour the vinegar water mixture through your brewing system and let it brew as if you were brewing a pot of coffee. I like to do this a couple times to make sure all the parts are cleaned. You will be amazed at the brown water that comes out and the gunk that is hiding in your coffee pot. Be warned, it will fill your home with an unpleasant smell but that will eventually go away.
Cleaning your coffee pot is very important if you want to have the freshest and most delicious coffee possible. I also like to clean my pot anytime I plan on having friends or family over for dinner. Serving after dinner coffee is not the same if you have a dirty pot. After you have cleaned your pot a few times you will notice the difference if you forget to go a week or two. The coffee does not taste nearly as fresh and will most likely have a bitter aftertaste.
