Soon You Can Become a Certified Digger Derrick Operator!

Developed to answer requests by industrial equipment manufacturers for operator certification, the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) will soon have a testing program available that will allow digger derrick handlers to gain certification for this mighty vehicle. With proper use of the vehicle and important safety practices in mind, this program is being created based on OSHA standards and combined with equipment safety information provided by manufacturers to provide a way to be sure that anyone using a digger derrick is appropriately trained.
Program Establishment
Leading industry manufacturers and organizations stand behind the development of this certification program. Terex Utilities, Altec Corporation and Quanta Services are a few, all of which have stated a dedicated interest in protecting users of this powerful vehicle, been included in a task force comprised of interested industry representatives commissioned to develop a testing program and put it into use. NCCCO plans to apply for accreditation with ANSI and OSHA once the program has been established and operational.
Uniqueness
Although the digger derrick does fall under the category of an industrial crane, and certification programs do exist for crane operators, this mighty digging machine is actually very unique and different than a crane truck. Because it can perform so many functions including typical crane functions, as well as other more specialized tasks including assistance with certain above-ground work, the vehicle does require considerably more and different experience than pure crane truck usage. For this reason, there has been an industry-wide push for digger derricks to identify separate and unique requirements and training.
Training Material
Preparatory materials and testing that will ensure the safe use of all digger derrick vehicles are being identified and compiled to form a complete resource for operators wishing to gain certification. While testing by NCCCO is not something that is required by manufacturers or companies, it is required in most states in order to obtain licensing to operate specific heavy-duty industrial equipment including digger derricks. Therefore, through the development of such tests, operators will be able to be tested and apply for licenses in each individual state.
Training Advantages
Of course, even if testing is not required by a state before obtaining an operator's license, the benefits of taking the course and being certified will always outweigh any other untrained scenario. Serious accidents and even deaths occur with the use of heavy equipment; so any means to prevent even one life-altering accident is worth consideration. It is recommended that individuals understand and desire to participate in this training even if employers do not require such certification.
Although it is still not finalized, current estimations are that a digger derrick certification course and testing should be launched by mid-2012 or shortly thereafter. Once this happens, individuals will have training material and testing available in order to become a certified operator; however, state requirements may differ, so each individual or employer needs to confirm what separate state qualifications once the NCCCO exams are available. Then it will be possible to receive a certified digger derrick operator's license!
