Serve Coffee Cake at Your Next Coffee Klatch!

Coffee cake is such a versatile dish it is truly perfect to eat any time of day! You can have it for breakfast, a quick snack or even as a light dessert. The great thing about this sweet treat is can be done in numerous ways, and it is up to your own interpretation on how you want to make it and enjoy it.
The term coffee cake came into existence because it was intended to imply cakes that are meant to be enjoyed alongside coffee or during a "coffee break". When I was a child I always assumed this dessert and pastry item actually had coffee in it, so I would never try it. As I have matured and my palate has changed I finally decided to give it a try. Much to my surprise it does not actually contain coffee, it is simply made to be enjoyed with a delicious coffee beverage. I wasted so many opportunities to try this cake!
There are many different versions of coffee cake and today I will talk about a few of my favorites. The first version, and the most traditional style, is one with a crumb topping. Usually the most common version will come flavored with cinnamon and other warm spices, be in the form of a ring shape, and sometimes called a streusel. Also you will often find the traditional cakes will have a sweet glaze or drizzle over the top. This is a very nice option when serving guests or looking for the real coffee cake experience.
Another form that you will often find is one that comes in the form of a Danish. A Danish is simply a sweet pastry, originally from Vienna. Danish comes is a variety of ways and you will often find them filled with jams, custards, a cheese mixture and topped with nuts such as slivered almonds. They can also be found drizzled with a coffee glaze or toffee. Danish are so common these days you can find them in most donut shops.
My favorite coffee cake is one that features glorious blueberries! This bakery item is very similar to a blueberry muffin, although you will usually find them topped with the delicious sweet, crumb topping. These are perfect for breakfast as well as an afternoon snack. I also enjoy the blueberry option because they go great with tea as well as coffee! If you are looking for a wonderful sweet treat, look into the world of coffee cake recipes to satisfy that sweet tooth!
