Make Your Own Iced Coffee Just Like Those Chain Stores Do

A delicious iced coffee is the epitome of the perfect summer beverage. They are cool, refreshing, and have a nice pick me up to them. The added benefit of the bit of caffeine is a nice addition and having one of these frosty beverages truly can beat the heat on a rough summer day. The wonderful thing about a delicious iced coffee, is you can make them at home, just like the coffee houses do, for a lot less money!
If you have tried an iced coffee at Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or other big coffee-house you know that the result is delicious drink that is not watered down and that is very strong! The key to a great iced coffee drink is to make sure the brewed coffee is strong enough. I find that using a darker roast of coffee is the key to a successful drink. My personal favorite is to use something like an espresso roast or a nice, dark Spanish roast. A Vienna roast or French roast can also do well as they have bittersweet flavor to them with low acidity.
The next step is brewing those lovely dark roasted beans. I find there are two methods to brewing a strong pot of coffee. The first one is the quick and easy way, brew a pot of coffee stronger than usual. Use about three times as much coffee as you would normally, and brew a pot of coffee. Once the coffee has cooled to room temperature, you can place it in the fridge to cool completely.
The second method is my preferred and favorite method. That is to steep coffee in water overnight. You ground a bunch of your favorite beans into a find ground. Once you have done that you simply want to add the grounds to water. Stir the mixture, and let it set out on the counter overnight in the pitcher. In the morning strain the coffee mixture with the use of a strainer and cheesecloth into a new pitcher. You can then take the strained coffee and let it hang out in the fridge for when you would like a delicious iced coffee drink.
Next you can simply drink it black over ice, or add what you like. Some ideas would be milk or cream, sugar or simple syrup and my favorite addition is some sweetened condensed milk. This makes for the perfect summer time drink!
