Learn About Important Training Needs for Digger Derricks!

In order to properly use a digger derrick truck without danger, a certain amount of training is involved. Besides training, the truck requires operators to hold certain licenses, all of which cannot be obtained until after receiving the proper vehicle education. With constantly changing safety regulations, it is important to stay current on the latest safety rules as well as basic operation of this vehicle in order to become certified.
Requirements
To become certified to operate digger derricks, certain required information is expected to be understood and practiced:
  • Standards, Rules, Regulations - Anyone operating this vehicle is expected to know and follow guidelines provided by OSHA, ANSI and NESC as well as any federal, state and manufacturer safety guidelines for each specific piece of equipment. Manufacturer's manuals must be read and understood and only certified individuals should be permitted to use the digger derricks.
  • Safety Information - It is important to recognize safety information when seen, including highlighted information in reading material and equipment labels. The different alert signs must be known and understood, including: Danger, Warning and Caution with or without a safety alert symbol. Stickers on equipment must be kept clean as well.
  • Safety Equipment - All required equipment, such as DOT triangles, cones, flares, fire extinguishers and seat belts, must be present and in good working order. This gear should always be used with no exceptions and it must always remain in good condition.
  • Inspection and Maintenance - Operators must know how equipment works, the specific details of a daily inspection, and how to recognize problems. Any issues with the digger derrick truck should be reported and repaired by someone who is qualified to maintain these vehicles. After repair and before being used again, it should be thoroughly inspected to ensure it is in proper working condition and that all repair equipment has been removed and protective guards and other gear is in place.
  • Operation - Certified operators are required to know how to properly use the digger derrick which includes: personally inspecting a vehicle before use; using all safety gear and required clothing; ensuring anyone within the area is wearing protective gear and following all precautionary measures; and the work area kept clear of people and/or debris or anything that could affect using this equipment. Drivers should also know what conditions prevent safe equipment usage such as weather or surface conditions, with a clear understanding of when not to use the truck.
  • Loads - Understanding load charts and any other vehicle limitations is critical information for proper vehicle usage. This includes limitations about: boom angle and extension configurations; load carrying capacity, work zones, and all other applicable variables. Load charts for each vehicle must be available and referred to at each job site to ensure proper load handling techniques are used.
Although there are many other safety and operational topics that digger derrick controllers need to know, this list should provide a good idea of the extent of the process to become certified. In spite of all of this, becoming a skilled digger derrick operator can be a very rewarding occupation as long as standards and regulations through proper training are always followed!
