Junior Golfers

Having been around the game of golf for several years, I wanted to share my thoughts on junior golfers, and just how competitive junior sports as become over the years.

When I was a kid (back before the age of computers, lol), all we did as kids was play sports. It really didn't matter what the sport was, if it had a ball... we were interested. We played for hours and hours. During the school year, we went from season to season, playing whatever the "in-season" sport was.

But, I don't know what you think, but in today's sports world, everything has become incredibly specialized. Kids are concentrating on one sport, playing that sport year-round. Parents are spending thousands of dollars for "off-season" lessons for their kids. You see more and more indoor sports facilities opening up all over the country.

For better or worse (you be the judge) for junior golfers, it is no different. Kids are getting involved with competitive golf at an extremely early age. The competition for college scholarships is intense. If you have a junior golfer that wants to pursue golf through high school and college, how as a parent are you supposed to help? What is required?

I have seen kids that are 7 years old entering junior golf tournaments. These kids are taking lessons 1-2 every week. They are on the golf course every chance they get. They have the best equipment. The most expensive designer clothes. If you're a middle class family, how in the world can you afford to pay for all of this stuff?

Well, here's some good news... you can afford it. Here's how:

1. First of all, I think you really need to have a discussion with your junior golfer to make sure they really want to pursue golf. Junior golfers must have an interest and passion in the sport.

2. If you have a First Tee Program in your area... sign up for classes.

3. Don't go out and get a second mortgage on your house to pay for range balls and green fees. Go to your local sporting good store, buy a bag of practice balls for $20. You can use these balls at any practice facility. Junior golfers can get hours and hours of practice time with little or no money needed.

4. Most city or local courses will offer a junior rate. In the summer, kids can play all day for next to nothing. Take advantage of this.
