Over the years, my son has received lessons from several different so-called "golf instructors." I wanted to share my thoughts on what I believe you should look for from a good coach.
1. The "big profile" instructor. You know, this is the person that works at the fancy golf course. The one that charges you $200 an hour, which is 3 times what everyone else in town charges. You must be thinking... I need to figure out a way to pay this guy, he's obviously the best instructor in my area. WRONG!!!! Don't fall for this trap. You're junior golfer does not need this type of instruction. Don't waste your money. This instructor will sell you on how great he/she is, give the lessons, and you'll just be out the money.
2. The "I can't focus" instructor. This is the guy that all of the little kids and junior golfers go to. The instructor charges a very reasonable fee. The only problem, they can't focus. Your junior golfer will be in the middle of a lesson, and the instructor will get distracted on 10 other things. If this happens... forget about this person.
3. The "I'm in charge of the golf course" instructor. This person will offer lessons, but they are too full of themselves to make a difference. They want to impress you with their job and how great their golf course looks. Forget about them.
Here is what you need:
- find the instructor that has a good reputation from the State's PGA Office.
- find the instructor that has a long list of returning students.
- You want an instructor that has been at their job for several years and that's established.
- Here's one of my musts: when your junior golfer is taking his/her lesson, the instructor must be completely focused on the lesson. No returning phone calls, I don't want to hear, "hit this bucket of balls and I'll be right back." The instructor must be completely focused on the student.
- You need an instructor that gives homework assignments. The student must practice his/her skills.
- Another must: ask your junior golfer if they like the instructor. This is critical. The instructor must be able to communicate well with kids.
- I also feel the instructor should be able to communicate well with the parent. Afterall, if you're not a golfer, how can you, as a parent, help your junior golfer if you don't know what is being taught? Communication is big with me. If your instructor can't return your phone call... that's a problem.

In conclusion, I think most parents can use their common sense to figure all of this out. Just don't get trapped (like I did) in paying money to the wrong type of instructors. There are many many wonderful golf instructors available. Don't get so caught up in trying to help your player that you end up going in the wrong direction. Find the instructor that cares, that knows the game, that has a good reputation, and most importantly, that you and your golfer feel is right for your needs.
